Posted at: 07/01/2009 7:09 PM Shirley Nelson (July)(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Every month ABC 6 NEWS takes the time to recognize a local educator making a difference in the lives of students. Shirley Nelson, nursing instructor at the Riverland Community College in Austin, checks for more than just vital life signs, she's making sure her students are prepared for anything that may come their way. "She has a reputation of being very tough,” says Dr. Terry Leas. "She told me to challenge myself and take on the things that were scary,” says Kathie Groeneweg. She brings with her, plenty of professional experience. "The 30 years that I have been a nurse there's a lot of things that happened to you that you collect, and also I share with them not only the positive things that I've done in nursing, but sometimes the negative things," says Shirley Nelson. Her knowledge and compassion radiate through her lectures. "Shirley, she has more of a particularity to be more involved,” says Wilfred LoHou. The losses of her mother, and most recently her daughter, have given her a different perspective about the nursing field. "I think it makes me more understanding of what it feels like to go through loss with relatives,” Nelson says. "The good thing about her, she didn't give up on us, she came back and always called us her children," says Lohou. Shirely's passion for nursing is certainly unambiguous "I always have loved nursing, I haven't just liked it, I have loved nursing and I think they can see it, even on the days you are tired. I think they still can pick up on it,” says Nelson. |
