El Nino is Back

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- This week the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced that El Nino has returned.

This will mean a changing global weather pattern, but how will it impact us here in southeastern Minnesota?

This upcoming winter you may be doing more of this and less of this

It's not due to global warming, but rather El Nino

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the official arrival of El Niño this week.

"We are definitely looking for the potential of an El Niño event here coming up as the waters in the eastern pacific are warmer than normal. That will have an impact on the weather pattern over the continental united states,” says Brad Adams.

So what does this mean for us in southeastern Minnesota?

Typically, a warmer winter…

The most recent El Niño occurred back in 2006 providing southeastern Minnesota with the warmest January on record.

And during an intense El Nino episode back in 1998, southeastern Minnesota recorded its second warmest year ever!

Precipitation trends with El Nino aren't as clear, but with milder temperatures we may receive less snow, and more ice and rain.

El Niño may also be a big factor on how much you pay at the pump this summer.

Typically, El Nino results in a less active Atlantic hurricane season, which means fewer storms to disrupt oil production in the Gulf of Mexico.

Whatever the weather El Nino brings to us this winter, you certainly will be hearing much more about it in the months to come

Now this current El Nino is expected to last until at least the end of the 2010 winter season.
