Posted at: 08/03/2009 9:44 PM New Study on Organic Food(ABC 6 NEWS)--- A new study that says organic food is not nutritionally better for you than other food is affecting Minnesota farmers. Mike Noble is the owner of Farm on Wheels in Kenyon. His produce has been certified organic since 1994. "We run 400 acres of organic crops." Business has been good, but noble says lately thing have been a little different. "We seen organic customers that were faithful contribute to the market coming past our farmers market being very angry that the organics that doesn't mean anything anymore," said Noble. Customers who are frustrated with the study that says organic food does not offer anymore-nutritional benefit than conventional food, but local organic farmers aren't sold. "I think there's a range of different perspectives and different studies and evidence on both sides," said Jack Hedin, from Featherstone Farm. Noble says it's important to know where the produce comes from. His cows and other animals graze freely, but he says not all food that is labeled organic is raised this way. "If your getting food from one of those industrial models there isn't a whole lot of difference, than that you're a chemically free farm," said Noble. And he says the standard for organic has been lowered in recent years. "There are farms where they interpret access to outside as just putting a screen along the side of the building, where the consumer thinks the chickens are walking around the yard," said Mike Noble, owner of Farm on Wheels. So now Noble has changed his company sign now to say "Beyond Organic" to show he is doing more than what is required. "I think virtually all organic farmers in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa here are beyond this organic standard, you have to know the farmer that you are getting your product from," said Noble. |
