After a lifetime of work, Fred Leubke was enjoying his retirement until he suddenly became a TV star. Every summer since 1973, Leubke, 91, and his wife Lorraine have sat outside their ancient trailer at Ten Mile Lake Resort and watched the world go by. Apart from when Leubke was in the Army as a radio technician in the Pacific during World War II, the couple has been inseparable. They've been married for 66 years and raised four children. Now they are retired and enjoying the summers away from their home in nearby Wahpeton, North Dakota. On the face of it there is nothing remarkable about this friendly couple, but Leubke is a local celebrity. Not too long ago he was asked to star in a series of television commercials. The commercials were for a local telephone company and they focused on their ability to provide long distance, and Leubke was perfect. But it was the one where he shared his starring role with his five-year-old granddaughter Abby Vetter that he enjoyed the most. |
