"I've still got skills and knowledge and abilities that would help other people." The Medical Reserve Corps trains and organizes people to deal with things like flood recovery - they could also help deal with something like an H1N1 outbreak. The Medical Service Corp is a national program; but this is the first year it's been done in Olmsted county. Public health officials across the country are mobilizing in case H1N1 becomes serious. "We may need more than just our own resources." Says Amy Evans from the Olmsted County Public Health department. Volunteers like Jewison will receive psychological first aid training, learn how to dispense medications and how to be part of an incident command center during an emergency. They could give shots, or just tell people where to go. "Mass vaccination clinics, possible using them for delivering things to people that might be in isolation and quarantine." Says Evans. For Jewison, it's a chance to give back. "I think it's important, you know, I don't know maybe this sounds kind of silly but, as Americans give back to our country, you know this is just a great place to live and a great state and community, heaven forbid something would happen here." Says Jewison. But if something does happen, people like Jewison will be here to help. |
