Phil Arant (September)

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Schaeffer Academy science teacher Mr. Phil Arant goes to great lengths preparing his students for a tightening economy.

This September, ABC 6 NEWS recognizes him as an Excellent Educator.

Phil brings his industrial background into the classroom.

"I spent, oh, 10-15 years in industrial labs, etc. I've seen things blow up,” says Phil Arant.

He makes science tangible with hands-on demonstrations.

"They build rockets as part of a science lesson, but he allows them to paint the rockets, you know to personalize them,” says Keith Phillips.

Phil's involvement with the Rochester regional science fair has led to some exceptional student achievements.

"You know the ceiling has taken off. They can just advance to whatever uh they can in that area." We've had a lot of students advance to the state level,” says Arant.

Mr. Arant is also well known for his...

"Probably his jokes," says Christopher.

"Everyone in the school knows if we hear a pun, it probably came from Mr. Arant," says Phillips.

The combination of hard work, passion, and enthusiasm for science create a beautiful recipe.

"Extremely organized, but without being a stuff guy, humble, a great husband, a great friend, just all around a great guy," says Phillips.

"Not only are we trying to teach the love of learning and that's part of my passion is teaching that because once the student just grasps the love for learning, I think the doors start opening for them," says Arant.
