Erin Schoen (October)

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Erin Schoen wants nothing more than a happy and normal life for her students.  She's doing her best to make that happen.

Erin is a special education teacher at Southgate Elementary in Austin, and this month, our Excellent Educator.

Erin focuses on teaching her students the curriculum they need to know:

"I do almost everything that an ordinary teacher does, we do math, and we do reading, and writing,” she says.

The students exhibit a great deal of intelligence.  One of Erin’s objectives is to help her students express it.

"We use a lot of pictures… we use communication devices,” she says.

Erin’s biggest dream:

"I would make it easier for all of them to communicate with everybody else. That's probably the biggest struggle that all of the kids,” she says.

"Erin is such an advocate for her students. You know all of her students obviously have great needs, but she's always ensuring that they are able to participate just like any other student,” says Sheri Willrodt.

Putting the books, pencils, and crayons aside; her inspiration comes down to something simple.

"The Children, When I come in during the morning and get ready for the day, the kids come in they are so wonderful and loving, I'm so lucky to get their smiles and hugs everyday,” she says.

"And just can really get the students to perform when many others don't have that success,” says Willrodt.
