Fire Prevention Week

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Tuesday afternoon a fire destroyed the Tufte home in Lyle.

Everyone made it out safely, but the fire is under investigation.

While this fire could have been a lot worse, this is the time of year when more house fires seem to happen in the area.

Its also fire prevention week…

When a fire breaks-out like the one in Lyle the fire department is the first one called, but the fire department makes a phone call of its own.

"We will call the Red Cross if the family needs assistance,” says Fire Chief Dan Wilson.

Members of the Mower County Red Cross responded to Tuesday’s fire in Lyle.

"Their home was totally destroyed so they needed a place to stay immediately,” says the Red Cross.

They have assisted with as many as 27 home fires in one year most of those fires come during the winter months.

"At this time of year were very concerned about people making aware of what they are doing in terms of heating sources and they try and use alternate heating sources to save on utilities,” the Red Cross says.

The Austin Fire Department also sees an increase in calls during the colder months.

But Fire Chief Dan Wilson says overall the amount of structure fires has gone down nationally by 50 percent over the last 30 years.

"The reason there are less fires is because of education, public education and awareness is making a huge difference,” says Wilson.

With the structure fire in Lyle and the approaching winter months, officials at the Red Cross says now is the time to execute fire safety plans in your home.

"If people take their own steps to make sure that they are prepared and ready that's a big help for us because if everybody takes some steps to be better prepared it minimizes the extent of tragedy or damage that might occur,” says the Red Cross.

The Red Cross says they're assisting the Tufte family with a place to stay until they get back on their feet as well as with clothing and toys for their small children.
