POLL: Two-thirds of Kids May Not Get H1N1 Vaccine

A new poll released Wednesday shows only 37 percent of parents are very likely to get their kids vaccinated against the H1N1 flu, leaving a lot of parents either against vaccination or undecided.

State and federal health officials are urging parents to get their kids vaccinated, but it may be an uphill battle.

"I just feel kids are going to get sick, and if they're going to get it, they're going to get it," said parent Julee Gackle.

The new Associated Press poll shows kids are most at risk of getting sick, but less likely to get the vaccine.

It shows more than six in ten seniors are likely to get the vaccine, but only 45 percent of young adults ages 18 to 29-years-old will likely get vaccinated.

"They are the group that's hardest hit with disease and with complications," said Kris Ehresmann with the Minnesota Department of Health.

But according to the AP poll potentially 2 out of 3 kids may not get vaccinated.

"I don't feel like, the risks, that it's worth it. We feel confident just with out kids and their health we'd be more comfortable with them, just going without it," said parent Scott Benning.

Parents who don't want their kids vaccinated offer reasons that vary from the newness of the vaccine, the lack of testing and even the possibility of getting the flu from the shot.

"The injectable influenza vaccine is made with a killed virus, so it's biologically impossible to get influenza or get the flu from the vaccine," said Ehresmann.

The Department of health told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS Minnesota's next shipment of H1N1 vaccine is supposed to be 50 thousand doses.
