That announcement came from the Blue Zones founder at a celebration Tuesday night. It's being called the Minnesota Miracle. A town brought together by wristbands, pedometers and a common goal, sharing stories about the program. Even people like Brian talked, who was skeptical at first. "I wasn't really planning on doing it, but as I began to do it, it became more and more fun,” he says. But was inspired to act after taking a test that told him how long he would live. "I’ve got to change because I really don't want to die at 50," he says. And there was a big announcement at the event. AARP donated $10,000 to the city that will help build a vitality center to help create more stories like Brian. That center will play a role in teaching others about the project, but the success of the city will depend on some of its youngest members. Kids like eleven-year-old Katie who goes to the farmers market with some of her friends after school and recognizes the impact on her community. "I think it's a good way to give people a second chance in life. My family, we've met a lot of our neighbors and have gotten closer to them,” says Katie. And because of the closeness, living in a Blue Zone won't end when the program does. "I think I'm going to try doing it and just keep living Blue Zone,” says Katie. Stay with ABC 6 NEWS Good Morning Wednesday, as Albert Lea's Blue Zone designation will be broadcast across the country. Good Morning America and ABC 6 NEWS Good Morning will broadcast live from Albert Lea highlighting the project.
