"Knowledge is your best weapon against this stuff," says Freeborn County Resident Jim Zenk. Community members like Zenk are fighting the H1N1 flu with the facts. "Everybody’s talking about it and I think that's where a lot of misinformation is coming from and people need to know what's accurate out there and what isn't," Zenk says. So residents are turning to Freeborn County Red Cross officials to learn fact from fiction. "We’ve been having meetings just to inform the public of preparation with the H1N1 flu, how to prepare for it, what to do if someone does get it," says Red Cross Chapter Director Jeanie Opdahl. For the crowd, no question was off the table. "Then you don't want to use your hands to touch any orifice?" asked on resident. "How long are you still contagious for?" asked another. One of the main messages from the meeting was to remind people the importance of using hand sanitizer as much as possible and washing your hands. "Disinfect door knobs on your doors, light switches, pens and pencils, anything that is in the room and if someone does get sick, disinfect everything that they've been in contact with," Opdahl says. One fact that was made clear Thursday night was that H1N1 is in southeast Minnesota. "I think people have been sitting back thinking it's not going to be as bad as what they say it could be, but now I think we're seeing it hit our schools very hard, I think now people are going to start taking a little more precaution," Jeanie Opdahl Red Cross officials also suggest staying away from crowded areas as more and more people come down with the H1N1 flu. |
