Austin Election Results

(ABC 6 NEWS) – The Austin School Board will see some changes after election night.  Three spots were open for the board.

Aaron Keenan – 2,303

Jeff Kritzer – 2,104

Richard Lees (Incumbent) – 1,961

Jeff Ollman – 1,912

Mary Kleis (Incumbent) – 1,841

David Simonson (Incumbent) – 1,587

Despite rainy weather, voters lined up at Austin High School to cast their ballots, including one new voter who came out so he could see the effects of the election during his final months as an Austin High School student.

"I thought it'd be kind of cool just to say who could be on the school board and actually have a say in it,” says senior Brady Klingfus.

Election judge Rodney Friedich observed, "It's been pretty steady all day long, this has been better than what the primary was."

Chairperson Don Fox shared how this will affect the school board, “I really don't think it'll make that much difference, our administration and employees have done a sensational job in keeping things running.”

Now on to the other question on Austin's ballot, the operating levy. The Austin school district currently has three levies in place. The school wants to replace two existing operating levies with a new ten-year levy that would bring in $531 per student.

The levy did not pass. With one hundred percent reporting, 2,077 voted yes and 2,193 voted no.

The word that was repeated tonight was maintain. Austin is looking for this levy to maintain class sizes, maintain current programs, and maintain the existing operations of the school. The superintendent says the district is trying to be proactive so they can meet their increasing expenses in a time where they are anticipating a severe lack of aid from the state.

Superintendent David Krenz says since the levy didn’t pass reductions will need to be made, “More kids in classrooms and more severely, cuts to current programs. By adding the extra million dollars we hope not to have that happen.”
