Collin Wencl

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- The Owatonna Huskies football team has been picking apart opposing defenses during their run to the Section 1AAAAA title game.

They're averaging 50 points a game in their last three contests, and getting a lot of help from the ABC 6 Sports Male Prep Athlete of the Week.

There were a lot of reasons Owatonna was able to put up 63 points against Century Saturday, but one of them was junior running back Collin Wencl.

"Collin is a pretty special player," Huskies Head Coach Jeff Williams said.

Wencl outscored the Panthers on his own, scoring five touchdowns compared to the Panthers four.

He had 90 yards rushing, 60 receiving, and an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

"This year he's just been an all purpose guy for us.  He's averaging well over 100 yards per game back up into the 6 yards per carry range, but he's really turning into a strong, physical back as well," Williams said.

He's also been playing with an injury to his left eye that he suffered against Faribualt in their second-to-last game of the regular season.

"I got hit in the eye and got a little bit of a concussion and I had blood in my cornea, so that was kinda freaky incident.  I didn't know if I would have 20/20 vision in that eye again," Wencl said.

His vision is still a little off, but he hasn't had a problem finding running lanes against opposing defenses.  Just ask Century.

"They just give me the ball in the red zone, hold onto it, get in the end zone," Wencl said.

"We've had a lot of really special backs in Owatonna over the years and he's right up there with them," Williams said.
