Hunters Prepare for Deer Opener

(ABC 6 NEWS) – Governor Pawlenty is heading to Thief River Falls today in anticipation for the seventh annual governor's deer hunting opener.

The firearms season starts Saturday, but some hunters are breaking the law by trying to get a head start.

Only temporary deer stands are allowed on the more than 1-million acres of state wildlife management land. But officers are already finding stands nailed into trees.

They're also finding evidence of hunters chopping down trees and baiting deer with carrots and apples.

The DNR says the solution is a portable deer stand that you take with you each night. Violators face fines starting at $150.
