2 RNC Protesters Sentenced for Tossing Road Sign

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A judge has sentenced two Wisconsin women to community service for throwing a road sign off a freeway bridge in St. Paul on the first day of the 2008 Republican National Convention.

Twenty-year-old Christina Vana of West Bend, Wis., and 23-year-old Karen Meissner of Menomonee Falls, Wis., both apologized Tuesday.

Judge Teresa Warner gave each woman a stay of their sentence - meaning the felony charges will be reduced to misdemeanors if the women complete their seven-year probation.

The judge also ordered each woman to do eight hours of community service every month for the next two years, for a total of 192 hours.

Both women currently live in Minnesota. The complaint says the sign nearly hit a police officer in town to provide security for the convention.
