Burnsville officials want residents to know water analysis kits that are showing up in mailboxes did not come from the city. People who received the kits expressed concern after looking closely at them. The flyers offer a water analysis service. They include a questionnaire, which asks for personal information, and direct homeowners to fill the bottle with water from their tap. Homeowners are told to hang the completed questionnaire and the water bottle from their doorknob to be collected the next day. City officials think a business might be trying to profit off of the city's recent problems with the taste and odor of tap water. Last month people living in Burnsville reported their tap water smelled of chlorine and pond water. At the time, city officials said the problems seem to have started when a new surface-water treatment plant came online in August. That plant treats water from a Burnsville mining company that would otherwise get dumped into the Mississippi. Officials said the cause was a build up of algae organic compounds. Chemicals, like chlorine, used to treat the algae were resulting in the strong smell. Officials said despite the smell, the water was safe to drink. The City of Burnsville wants residents who are concerned about their water to call 952-890-4550 to arrange for water testing in their homes. The City does not support or approve of any home drop-off water sample program. For more information, log on to the city website at www.burnsville.org |
