Posted at: 11/16/2009 10:51 PM Give to the Max(ABC 6 NEWS) - Tuesday is a very big day for non-profits across the state of Minnesota. It's "Give to the Max" day, a day when your donations are matched to give even more to those in need. It's all happening online. "It’s 24 hours of giving in Minnesota," said Gift of Life Transplant Director of Development Thomas Bruckman. Local non-profits, like Rochester’s gift of life transplant house, will have their eye on the Internet from 8 a.m. this Tuesday until 8 a.m. Wednesday. A new Minnesota-based website called givemn.org is holding a "Give to the Max” Day to raise as much money as possible for charities in 24 hours. "It’s an incentive to get people to donate online throughout the state and there's matching grants available," Bruckman said. Half a million dollars in matching money to be exact, provided by the bush foundation, Minneapolis foundation and the St. Paul foundation. And in this economy that's something every non-profit can use. "Overall, across the u.s. and in parts of Minnesota as well, giving is down, their pocket books are hurting," said United Way’s April Sutor. So they're keeping their fingers cross that this donation day will turn things around. "I’m hoping that it will help organizations that are struggling a little bit more and that people could see that no matter how small, their gifts do matter," Sutor said. Matter to the thousands of people who depend on non-profits everyday to get by, people like Megan Malwitz. "We appreciate it because it's a nice place to go to and you know people are supporting you,” Malwitz said. So organizations are asking Minnesotans to log-on and lend a helping hand in whatever way possible. "It’s a few clicks of a mouse and they can make a difference where they want to," Sutor said. Givemn.org is the first giving-site focused specifically on non-profits in one state. Creators believe online donation sites could be the future of philanthropic giving. |
