The Austin Charter Commission is meeting this afternoon to discuss changing the role of the mayor. Currently, Austin's mayor is elected for a two year term in office. The Charter Commission is debating a change that would make it a four year term, in keeping with most city council positions. The commission would also give the mayor a tie breaking vote if the city council ever deadlocks on an issue. Currently, Austin's mayor has no vote. Changing the charter would require unanimous approval from the city council. |
