Mpls. Woman Sentenced for Murder Plot

A Minneapolis woman was sentenced to ten years in prison for plotting to kill her stepmother in an attempt to collect an inheritance worth millions.

Emily Roitenberg, 39, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder.

She admitted she tried to hire a hit man to kill her late father's widow, Gail Fiskewold, 57, of Finlayson.

Roitenberg asked a friend to find someone to kill Fiskewold. The friend went to police who set up a sting. An undercover officer posed as a hit man. According to prosecutors, Roitenberg tried to pay him $45,000 to kill Fiskewold.

According to court records, Roitenberg's father left Fiskewold $8 million. If Fiskewold died, Roitenberg and her sister stood to get $4 million a piece.

Before sentencing, Roitenberg apologized to Fiskewold.

Judge Peter Albrecht set the sentence which was a downward departure from sentencing guidelines. He said he imposed a lighter sentence because Roitenberg is "taking legal responsibility for her actions, and that has value".

Roitenberg was also given credit for 254 days in jail already served.
