More often than not, wrestling is a sport athletes begin at a young age, but that's just a general rule. There are always exceptions, like our Male Prep Athlete of the Week.
"I started late. I started wrestling in 8th grade. Most kids start when they're in kindergarten or pre-school," Alex Evan said.
But that hasn't stopped him from becoming one of the area's top wrestlers. The 152-pounder's picked up the sport in practically no time.
"He's a go, go, go-type kid. He goes hard six minutes. He's out to exhaust his opponent. He leaves the mat pretty fresh and his opponent leaves the mat pretty tired," John Marshall head coach Brian Parlin said.
It's an example that's made an impact on his teammates. Evan was named senior co-captain this year.
"I'm always giving the little guys a push. If they need help, they can come to me and always ask for it. (I'm) kind of a role model to them," Evan said.
Evan didn't need any help of his own this past Saturday. He dominated the competition at the Rochester Duals, pinning three of his opponents and going 4-0 on the day.
"So far, 4-0 ... you can't complain about that. But there's still a few things you've gotta work on to keep that undefeated status for awhile," Evan said.
"He's come a long way in the last two or three years, and I think now, he really has the confidence, and he really knows that he can go out there and dominate. And that's what he's been doing," Parlin said.
As nice as 4-0 is right now, Evan has much bigger plans in mind for later in the season.
"That's my goal ... to get to state. It's been my goal for awhile now, and this year, I feel like I can achieve it," Evan said.
