(AP) - The Independence Party is backing a three-term mayor in a special state Senate election in southern Minnesota. Waseca Mayor Roy Srp (surp) is running in the Jan. 26 special election in Senate District 26, the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Dick Day. Srp says he will file as a candidate with the Secretary of State's office on Wednesday. Srp has the backing of former U.S. Rep. Tim Penny, the Independence Party candidate for governor in 2002. Candidate filing for the special election opens Wednesday and runs through Dec. 29. The rural state Senate district includes the cities of Faribault, Owatonna and Waseca.
