Former School Leader Charged with Sexual Assault

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- A former Kasson-Mantorville school board member is charged with sexually assaulting an underage girl.  Dodge County authorities arrested Steven Allen on New Years Eve.  They say the alleged abuse began nearly a year ago.

It was business as usual in Kasson on Tuesday.  But behind the scenes, one of the town’s own is playing a key roll in an unfolding controversy.

"We got information, I believe the first part of December, that there were inappropriate actions taken and we started an investigation at that time," says Mike Leonhardt of the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office.

Police believe Steven Allen sexually assaulted a teenage girl while he was an acting school board member. According to court documents, it started at an RCTC wrestling match in January of 2009.  The victim and the suspect left the wrestling match to go for a drive, and that was allegedly the beginning of the first of three reported assaults.  Assaults took place in both Olmsted and Dodge Counties.  Now Allen faces two charges of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree.

"These are the charges at this point and if anything more would come to light, we would investigate that for the future," says Leonhardt.

A future that's still up in the air for K-M Schools.  The superintendent says Allen resigned for personal reasons just before he was arrested.

"It's unfortunate.  He has children and that is our biggest concern, taking care of them. On my end, I've got to guide the board to fill the seat," says Superintendent Peter Grant.

And Grant adds, they’re moving on.

"We have issues that we want to deal with that, but we didn't stop school today and our board is going to continue to operate like they normally do," says Grant.

Allen is set to make his first court appearance Wednesday morning in Dodge County Court.
