Two dogs died Sunday after running out onto Neil Lake in Eden Prairie and falling through the ice. Authorities said it is a good reminder for everyone this time of year.
Fire Chief Rick Neville said it appears the dogs were running after geese on the lake when they fell through. Rescuers tried to revive both dogs but we're unsuccessful.
A family in Plymouth managed to save their dog from a similar situation on Schmidt Lake Sunday. Adam and Rudy Raftshol used a canoe and rope to reach their dog Lucy.
Authorities said as a good rule of thumb people should never wander out on ice that is less than two inches deep. They said it takes at least five inches to support a snowmobile and no one should ever assume any ice is safe.
