(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Every month ABC 6 NEWS takes the time to recognize local educators who make a difference each day in the lives of students.

This high school math teacher is not only a success in the classroom, but on the playing field too.

"Algebra II and pre-calculus,” says Mr. Rauen.

Most students dread those words, but not in Mr. William Rauen's classroom…

He's known for simplifying math, coaching the Zumbrota-Mazeppa football team, serving as student council advisor, and, at times, cracking the occasional joke.

This month he's our Excellent Educator.

What gives him such a good reputation?

"I think his dedication. Mr. Rauen is not only an outstanding teacher, but probably as the nominee brought to your attention, runs our student council, is head football coach, does numerous coaching at the lower levels. Just an all around good person to have on your staff,” says Mr. Erick Enger.

"He makes things easier,” says Chase Nichols.

And math isn't always easy.

"He actually gets into a lot of details with like the way he explains how to do a problem,” Nichols says.

With long days, both in the classroom and on the field, it's the kids that motivate him.

“My father first and foremost he was a Jr. High math teacher and phy. ed teacher and a football coach. My wife also talked me into becoming a teacher in college. I had some very good teachers in math in high school,” says Mr. Rauen.

While they may not understand now, Mr. Rauen hopes these lessons stick with his students into the future.

"That they are able to use this math sometime in their life, maybe they won't realize it now, but at some point in time later on they'll use it and remember "oh yeah, we went through that in class,” says Mr. Rauen.

"He impacts students in a special way and that's always nice to see,” says Mr. Enger.
