Childcare Center Economic Victim

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Layoffs and a deepening recession have affected many businesses.

And even the childcare industry isn't immune from the economic downturn.

Decreasing demand and increasing operating costs force a local daycare center to shut its doors.

You can add childcare centers to the list of victims of this economy and the Civic League Day Nursery Schools aren't immune.

"We don't know what the future is going to bring. We don't know if unemployment will continue to rise, thus childcare needs will be down," says Sarah Pacchetti.

Civic League runs three centers across Rochester.

With a decrease in demand and an increase in operating costs, the question of whether to renew the northwest building's lease became clear.

"Committing ourselves to a long-term lease just didn't seem like the smartest decision at this point," says Pacchetti.

Meaning the northwest center's doors will close come June, a decision that will save thousands of dollars, in leasing, operating and repair costs.

"We were working on a fairly bare-bones budget. We were fine, but we had no room to do the things we wanted to do," Pacchetti says.

That extra money will allow them to expand programs, take more fieldtrips, and add foreign languages, perks that at least one parent enjoys.

"My three-year old reads math for bed time. Their comprehension is a more, a year, I would feel a year more advanced," says Angela Bostrom.

Angela Bostrom's kids are two of roughly 50 who will be affected by the switchover...and all but five infants, will have the chance to transfer to a different branch.

As for the staff?

"If all of our families make the transition things look very good that we might not have to make any layoffs at all," says Pacchetti.

At most they say, two people will be let go, a silver lining in an otherwise cloudy economic forecast.

Civic League says they're waiting for the market to rebound and the demand to go back up, before they open their new northwest location, but they've already started raising money for its construction.
