A Minneapolis man faces charges after he allegedly started a backpack on fire inside the Mall of America on April 1.
Andrew John Nietz, 24, faces first-degree attempted arson and terroristic bomb threat charges.
According to the criminal complaint, Nietz brought a backpack filled with an aerosol can that blew up. Police say they could hear the explosions as they were responding.
When arrested, Nietz told officers he was a terrorist and that he had rocket-propelled grenades and that he knew all about guns, according to the complaint.
A week later, Nietz came back to the Mall of America and tried to light a rack of transit brochures on fire, according to investigators. Again, Nietz told officers he was a terrorist and mentioned explosives and grenades, according to the complaint.
Prosecutors say Nietz outwardly admitted to the fires and remains in custody. No one was injured during any of the incidents.
If convicted, Nietz faces 10 years and a $17,500 fine for the arson charge, and three years and a $3,000 for each terroristic bomb threat charge.
