SUV strikes, kills pedestrian in Carver Co.
Charges filed in December pedestrian death
A Chaska man pleaded guilty in the death of pedestrian.
Gregory Benedix, 43, entered a plea on the misdemeanor count of failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The state dismissed another similar charge in exchange for the plea.
Benedix was driving his SUV on Highway 41 in downtown Chaska on December 3, when he hit Jerome Meuwissen, 86.
Meuwissen was crossing in a marked crosswalk at Second Street. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center where he died from injuries.
Benedix is scheduled to be sentenced on June 12 in Carver County District Court. The charge carries a maximum punishment of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Since Meuwissen's death, his family has lobbied for a stop light to be installed at the intersection. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is considering it.
