Farmer's Market Opening Day

(ABC 6 NEWS) -- For many people, shopping at the local farmers market gives them an opportunity to buy local, and buy fresh.

Shopping at the local farmer's market is something many people look forward to all year.

"I wait for it for months and months and I mourn its loss when it closes in the fall," said Jane Samuelson.

The start of the farmer's market season means residents don't have to look far to add fresh foods to their diet.

"Most of our food travels on average about 1,500 miles before we eat it, and if you get farmers market food, you know you're getting really fresh, locally grown food,” said Dr. Leslie Lydle, from the University of Minnesota.

"Something about it not having to travel from a long distance to get to our market. It's got better flavor than what you can get at the grocery store," said Jane Samuelson.

And this year's opening day is not only being visited by residents, but nationally recognized health experts, with tips on healthy eating.

"Stop watching TV we find that people who sit down and watch TV while eating end up eating 45% more per minute than people who don't," said Dr. Brian Wansink, the Author of Mindless Eating.

The farmer's market kickoff is also signaling the start of Albert Lea's Vitality Project.

A Blue Zone is an inspired program aimed at helping people live longer, healthier lives and experts say shopping here, is one way to tack on those extra years.

"You get more produce, you get more fruits and veggies that are packed with nutrients, so those are healthy choices," said Dr. Leslie Lydle.

All this while coming together to enjoy the outdoors, and pick out foods that not only support the community and better their lives.
