(ABC 6 NEWS)--- Officials from one local roofing company are warning residents to be careful of unscrupulous contractors.
Need to fix your roof?
If so, the experts say be careful of door-to-door contractors.
One Rochester resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, says she recently fell victim.
"They make it sound like they're acting on our best interest, but they're a little shady."
"There are multiple companies that are doing this."
Ryan Reinalda and his mother Lori, who own and operate Above All Roofing of Rochester, say these door to door contractors get the homeowners to sign what they think is nothing more than a simple estimate for repair work.
"They don't know that they're signing anything other than a piece of paper that says they can get up on the roof to get an estimate done,” said Lori Reinalda - Above All Roofing of Rochester, Inc.
But they say the homeowners are unknowingly signing a contract that requires them to use the door-to-door company if any insurance money is used to fix the roof.
"So what's happening is homeowners are hiring contractors that they had no intention of hiring," said Ryan Reinalda.
Police say it's not an uncommon story this time of year.
"This is probably what we would call a legal scam because they did sign a contract. But what we would encourage people to do is please do not fall for any door-to-door sales pitches that you get," said Darrel Hilderbrandt from the Rochester Police Dept.
Eric Ronningen of Ronningen Roofing has another piece of advice.
“I would say it's always best to open your phone book and look for your local contractors."
Unfortunately for this woman, that advice is too little, too late.
"I'm not working with anybody right now. It's not worth stressing me out."
