(ABC 6 NEWS) -- It's been about three months since the process of moving American television stations from analog to digital-only broadcasts began.
And now, the next phase of the DTV conversion is just weeks away.
The days of analog are numbered.
"On June 12th, approximately 8AM, our analog signal will be turned off,” says Wendell Nelson, Chief Engineer of ABC 6.
When the station pulls the plug on their analog signals three weeks from now, as many as three million American households could lose TV service. Now's the time to make sure yours isn't one of them.
And there are a couple of ways to do that.
"Put up an antenna, get a converter box, have an HD set or subscribe to satellite or cable," Nelson says.
If you get your TV signal by satellite or cable, the June 12th DTV conversion will come and go unnoticed.
But for others...
"The most important thing ...is to find out when the TV was manufactured," says Travis Stiller, of G & S Antenna.
"If you have an old analog set, the converter box is probably the best way to go," Nelson says.
Like the name implies, the box coverts the digital signal so you can view it on your old analog television. But if your set is only a couple of years old, it probably has the converter box built in.
"All new sets will clearly state somewhere on the set that they're HDTV ready," Nelson says.
Regardless of the age of your television, if you don't subscribe to cable or satellite you'll have to be hooked up to some kind of antenna and have that antenna pointed in the right direction.
"It’s a matter of what kind of channels you want to pick up, where your physical location's at to correspond with the towers where they're broadcasting at," Stiller says.
The change was mandated by the federal government to help police, fire and other emergency officials create better communications systems.
The trade-off is a sharper image and, for viewers who watch free over-the-air TV, a wider variety of channels.
"It really kind of put the broadcasters on an even footing with the cable systems," Nelson says.
