Many Minnesotans are dusting off their boats this Memorial Day weekend and heading to the lake. With gas prices lower than the last several holiday seasons, the lakes will likely be packed with boats.
But the drought has made one Metro lake a little more difficult to access.
On White Bear Lake, it will take a little extra work to access its waters. The lake is one of the highest elevated in the state.
So when it gets dry, the water becomes too shallow for boaters to draw out their boats. Currently, the lake is about a foot away from reaching the lowest level on record, set in 1991.
Brian McGoldrick manages docks off White Bear Lake. He tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he's already out $50,000 this year because he can't rent out about 10 percent of his slips.
"I don't know how much worse it can get as far as impacting us," he said.
Because of the lack of rain, the Ramsey County Beach was forced to close—due to the receded waterline and dangers of unexpected drop offs that swimmers can’t see.
"You’ve got a bunch of kids swimming and have a drop off six to eight feet from ankle deep and now boom, you have a safety risk," McGoldrick explained.
For now, the beach is only open to boaters.
