So imagine saving hundreds of dollars in the checkout line each month. A website called mommysavers.com is helping families do that. Being a mother of four isn't easy. It takes patience, love, and a lot of organization. And for Kelli Strom, it also takes budgeting. They are all getting to the age now where they're going and doing things and school and there's certain types of clothes that they may want or styles they may want and so to find those on sale or by use of a coupon through an online sale helps a lot, says Kelli Hollandale. She's a stay at home mom in Hollandale, her husband works full time but with busy lives. She, like many other moms, needs a little help with caring for her family -- affordably. That's where mommysavers.com comes in. She's been a member of the website for years. Now, Kelli estimates she saves $50 a month on groceries, and hundreds each fall before the start of school. It's the brainchild of southern Minnesota mother of two, Kim Danger. She and her family live in Mankato. The idea for the site came after the birth of her daughter nine years ago. We had been a 2 income family for 6 years before we had our first child and all of a sudden, I found myself a stay at home mom and money was tight, we had this new baby, Danger says. This new family brought new reasons to save. "I was not only looking for ways to save money, but I was really looking for other parents I could connect with and share ideas on how to save money on diapers or how to start a play group and things like that, all those things new moms are thinking about, Danger says. Mommysavers is home to coupons, freebies, and online forums where moms talk about the deals they find - and where. Kim says it was a natural career choice. "I was born a bargain shopper. I used to go garage sailing with mom and grandma. I used to clip coupons when I was a little girl. I think if you're born and raised that way, its hard to stray from those habits, Danger says. Those habits come in handy, as money gets tighter. Today, Kim is helping other moms learn from her experiences, saving them time and money. "When I answer someone's question, they kind of have that aha moment that, you know, 'I can live well for less, I don't have to spend a ton of money to get what I want, says Danger. What started as a small group is now 30,000 mommies strong. Helping mommies save and have a little fun. "Its like score! For me, shopping is like a great adrenaline rush and its like a game and you can find what you want and it's such a great price," says Strom. The website isn't only about coupons or sales, some mothers meet up and actually trade clothes. And that doesn't cost a thing! Remember, the way to save your family money is to only buy the things you need. Also, set a monthly budget, and then stick to it. |
