(ABC 6 News) – When Ability Building Community, a disability resource center shut down in 2020, many of its clients lost their routines and socialization.
That includes Maria Kann who has down syndrome.
Her parents say they struggled to find other centers but ten months later they received a call saying Maria could come back to ABC.
There are many more families in the area who need the same help. ABC says it’s currently serving about 600 clients, but still doesn’t have enough workers to fill the need.
"Everybody who gets services, their lives change just like they did for Maria, and unfortunately, there is not enough staff to provide the same level of services there were before the pandemic started," said Brenda and Steve Kann, parents of Maria.
The center says it has about 60 job openings right now with very few people applying.
