Byron softball team ready for regular-season doubleheader opener

(ABC 6 News) — With winter prep sports now in the books the attention shifts to outdoor sports such as baseball and softball. Several teams will take the field for their first regular-season game this week. One of those teams is the Byron softball team.

Coach Jacob Harmon’s club started practice indoors Monday, where they got in some light running and throwing before shifting outdoors.

Last year, the Bears went 20-4 but were eliminated by Kasson-Mantorville in the Section 1AAA semifinals.

The Bears will have a chance to exact some measure of revenge when they face the Komets this Saturday as part of a doubleheader.

"The first games of the season being like a doubleheader is probably going to be tough for us," senior pitcher Madison Crocker said. "We haven’t played a lot obviously yet and it’s going to be cold."

Junior pitcher Macy Borowski admits practicing indoors will have an effect on the team because they haven’t got outside enough because of the cold weather, but she says she’s still optimistic.

"Yeah, I think we’ll be fine," Borowski said. "We have two different pitchers so we’ll probably split games so it’ll be like a whole different game the next game and as long as we wipe off what happened the first game no matter win or lose I think we’ll start fresh again."

Byron will play Caledonia in game 2 of the doubleheader. Should the weather permit unplayable conditions outside, Coach Harman says they will play at the Austin Dome.
