(ABC 6 News) – Rochester Community Initiative (RCI) hosted its second annual 5K fun run Saturday afternoon. The run/walk started in Soldiers Field Park.
The focus of the fun run was to increase environmental awareness and support the youth involved in wanting to help save the environment.
50 percent of the funds raised will go into RCI’s community gardens which grow crops and gives those back out into the community at various events. The other half of the money raised will be split among some local Rochester environmental groups.
"I think when it comes to big issues like climate change and sustainability, it can feel really easy to have a sense of doom or feel like you can’t contribute anything to this large issue so I want people to understand that on the smallest level from their individual self to the community, there are ways to start initiatives and collaborate with other people to solve problems," Yasmin Ali, Chief Operating Officer of RCI, said.
There was also a Taco Lab truck, cold brew coffee from Cafe Steam and a silent auction with baskets from businesses like Trader Joe’s, a Rochester Athletic Club membership and Forager Brewery.
