(ABC 6 News) – Friday, members of the Latino community in Austin were able to pick up food baskets and get free covid vaccines.
The event was put on by a group called CLUES, an organization that works towards social and economic equality for Latinos in the state. 200 food baskets were given on a first-come, first-served basis and they were gone in about an hour.
"I love to come here because they help the community and I’m very happy to help come and support the community," said Esmiall, a volunteer from Mexico. "Everybody comes very happy and I’m very happy to help everybody too."
The goal is to give people a way to stay healthy, for no cost.
"It’s a big support to my family. They help support being healthy," said a teenager who was also at the event.
Some of the donations came from the Channel One Regional Food Bank.
There will be another food basket giveaway in June. Vaccines will also be available at that event.
