Snow, ice leads to tricky travel Friday morning

(ABC 6 News) – A winter storm blanketed much of northern Iowa and southeastern Minnesota with several inches of snow, and some ice, on Friday morning.

Once the snow started it began to come down heavily and pile up quickly.

Roads quickly became covered with snow which led to vehicles having to take it slow in order to get their destination.

MnDOT snow plows were out and about early in the morning to try and clear the snow the best they could, but even they had a tough time with the high snow rates at times.

The snow and slick roads led to numerous schools closing or being delayed including Rochester Public Schools, Austin Public Schools, Albert Lea, and Mason City.

Much of the area received 2″ to 8″ of snow with some places getting more.

Viewers sent in their snowfall reports with Austin receiving 6-7″ of snow, Spring Valley around 8″, and Dexter a whopping 10″ of snow.

The snow and ice also led to some tricky travel troubles on area roads. There were a fair share of crashes and slide-off’s reported by the MnDOT throughout the morning, but they were minimal.

ABC 6 News Weather First Meteorologist Jim Peterson says accumulating snow has ended with flurries the rest of the day.
