“Wreaths Across America” honors fallen soldiers this holiday season

(ABC 6 News) – Saturday, ceremonies were held across the country as part of “Wreaths Across America” to honor fallen and missing soldiers this holiday season. One of these ceremonies was held at Soldiers Memorial Field Park in Rochester.
“It’s important so that the veterans are never forgotten. A lot of them served in wars long ago and through generations, it’s easy for people to be forgotten. The goal is to keep their lives and their memories alive,” explained Cadet 2nd Lt. Mckenzie Strenke.
One by one, fallen soldiers names were read, and a holiday wreath was laid in honor.
Community members and families gathered in the memorial to listen, to thank, and to remember the lives lost.
“It’s good to see the community get behind their veterans and remember their veterans during the holiday seasons,” added Matthew Treichel, 2nd Lt. of the SE MN Composite Squandrant Civil Air Patrol.

“I have veterans in my family so it touches directly to my heart,” added Cadet 2nd Lt. Ben Olson. “So honoring and remembering other peoples family members, my own family members, is important to me.”
For those that are currently serving, it means a lot to know that they will be remembered for their service.
“I’m starting my career in the international guard and I think it’s really important that we’re keeping veterans alive. I hope that my memory stays alive at some point as well,” Strenke said.
Following the memorial, everyone gathered at nearby cemetery’s to place the hand-maid wreaths at the foot of every tomb stone.
“We’re gonna be teaching our youth what those freedoms cost,” added 2nd Lt. Treichel.
It’s important to remember that for some, the holidays mean taking a moment of silence, to honor an empty seat at the table.
“Just take a few minutes throughout your day and thank them for the ability to have that turkey dinner and have the freedoms to do as they wish,” said 2nd Lt. Treichel.
