Chatfield Fire Department, Red Cross to install free smoke alarms next weekend

(ABC 6 News) – The Chatfield Fire Department and American Red Cross will install smoke alarms for families during a Sound the Alarm event.

Chatfield residents that are vulnerable to house fires can have a smoke alarm installed between 9 and 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. Anyone interested in having an alarm installed should text or call and leave a voicemail with their address to the Chatfield Fire Chief at 507-884-4423.

Please note, this number is specifically for Chatfield residents. Individuals living outside Chatfield may call the American Red Cross serving Southeast Minnesota at 507-287-2200 to request a smoke alarm installation appointment in the coming weeks.

“Most people don’t realize they only have two minutes to escape a home fire — and that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years,” Chatfield Fire Chief Luke Thieke said. “Taking action with this knowledge can be the difference between survival and tragedy.”
