(ABC 6 News) — Tuesday was day one of the Austin Bruins’ main camp with many hopeful players trying to make the cut.
Walter Zacher is a returning forward on the team and anticipates good things and expectations from his new future teammates.
"Looking forward to meeting the new guys," Zacher noted. "It’s my third year here and every year we’ve had a great group, so I’m just looking forward to making new friends, making – having new teammates and all that, looking forward to the year."
"It felt good to be fast-paced again and up and down the ice like that. Good-paced games. Some of those – some of the first camp games usually are a little choppy and all that. But it really felt good to have a flow to the game and compete levels high today."
Bruins head coach Steve Howard has plenty to keep his eye out for and welcomes the challenge of picking the right players for the upcoming season.
"It’s the first time we’re seeing them on our ice, you know?" Coach Howard explained. "And we’ve scouted them. We’ve watched them play on their ice. Now they’re playing with our veterans. And at the end of the day, we want to make sure that we pick the right kids.
"We got to have a good mix of a little bit of everything. We got to have some skilled defensemen, some big defensemen, skilled forwards, some forwards that hit. So, you got to have a puzzle that you got to put together, and hopefully, by Friday, we’re going to have it."
All camp scrimmages are open for public viewing as is the All-Star Game on Friday.
The Bruins are also looking for billet families to host their players and if you are interested in becoming one, you can go to the Bruins’ website for more information.
