Rochester City Council moves on municipal IDs

(ABC 6 News) – Rochester is one step closer to getting municipal IDs.

The Rochester City Council voted Monday night to begin the process of creating new city guidelines for what city IDs can and cannot be used for.

Two people who live in Rochester, but are not American citizens testified to the council about how the IDs would be a valuable form of identification for immigrants.

They said many immigrants rely on a passport as a form of ID — but carrying them around regularly can be risky. If their passports get lost, many immigrants have to travel back to their home country to get a new one.

Following testimony, the council unanimously voted to create an ordinance for city IDs. They will hear the proposed ordinance in their July 18 meeting.
