(ABC 6 News) — The Mayo VFW baseball team is getting ready for the district playoffs which will take place in Winona. The team practiced day at Dale Massey Field ahead of their matchup against the top-seeded Winona squad. Mayo clinched a spot after coming out on top in a three-game slugfest with Albert Lea and will be the fourth seed.
The VFW team knows how the Legion team was eliminated out in Winona this week, and some players say they feel some pressure to not suffer the same fate. But they are embracing and rallying behind being underdogs.
“I like to represent Mayo and what they stand for,” Alec Sadowy said. “It’s a good feeling to go pretty far. I’m going to try really hard.”
I mean yeah we’re the underdogs so these teams are looking to crush us…” Liam Williams noted. “…But I mean we beat Winona earlier in the season, so we had a shot against them but I think Northfield and Owatonna are our biggest competitors here.”
The Spartans have had a high-powered offense lately, the past three games have seen Mayo average 13.6 runs.
