The Landing MN prepares for cold week

(ABC 6 News) – Temperatures are expected to drop this week and while it may just be typical winter weather for some, for those experiencing homelessness, it can be a life-threatening situation.

The Landing MN, a Rochester non-profit that assists those experiencing homelessness, is preparing for the cold week.

At the Landing, people can get food, a shower and most importantly, find warmth in the winter.

But the non-profit’s co-founder Dan Fifield says it takes a lot more than you think to keep the day center running.

“Last month our utilities just for gas, water and electric was in excess $2,000,” Fifield explained. “We’re looking at a $50,000-60,000 per month cost to run the day center. That’s staffing, that’s food, that’s infrastructure all of that.”

With the bills higher than ever these days, Fifield says the Landing is in need of monetary donations and volunteers from the community.

“The biggest challenge is just making sure that everybody is warm and dry,” he added.

Fifield and his wife Holly say donations are always accepted and appreciated.

Disposable razors, shaving cream are in need currently. Also clothing like men’s blue jeans as well as gently worn/ new shoes as well. However, anything and everything is always accepted.

Fifield says it is best to drop donations off between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
