Former St. Charles Mayor to run for Winona County Commissioner
(ABC 6 News) – Longtime St. Charles Mayor, Bill Spitzer, has announced he will run for Winona County Commissioner.
The seat was recently vacated by Representative Steve Jacob (R) who was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives last year.
Spitzer served five two-year terms as St. Charles Mayor from 2005-2014. He has over 40 years’ experience in public service ranging from deputy sheriff to Mayor and currently serving as the chairman of the St. Charles Economic Development Administration (EDA).
While serving as Mayor, Spitzer lead the community through many setbacks such as the flood of 2008 which devastated areas of St. Charles and the loss of its major employer, North Star Foods which was destroyed by a fire in April 2009.
Mayor Spitzer believes his experience in building partnerships as well as relationships will help the county board to move forward in a positive direction.
“Serving the public is an honor,” commented Spitzer. “My decade of leadership as mayor was a highlight of my public service and I look forward to broadening that service to the citizens of Winona County.”
Spitzer strongly believes in the importance of being fiscally responsible, especially when it comes to governmental agencies. Controlling the tax levy will be a top priority with his leadership.
A special election for the District 3 seat will fall on Tuesday, May 9. If more than two candidates file to run for the seat, the May 9 election will become a primary election. The two candidates who earn the most votes would then proceed to a special general election on Tuesday, Aug. 8.
