Social-ICE returns to downtown Rochester

(ABC 6 News) – After a two-year hiatus, a fan-favorite event has returned to Rochester.

Social-ICE is officially returning to Rochester this year after it had been canceled due to the pandemic.

One person enjoying the event is one of the ice carvers: Nick Lensing.

“Just really intrigued me, so I stuck with it, worked with other people that were professional ice carvers, and it progressed into something I really enjoy,” Lensing said.

Lensing has participated as a carver since the very beginning of Social Ice.

Several ice sculptures are already nearing completion. There will be 15 in total this year.

“A lot of people here love to come to see the ice. A lot of times, they are attractions that bring everyone’s family around. It’s something I think is really good for Rochester right now,” Connor Quattrin said.

A couple of Quattrin’s favorite things about Social-ICE in the past have been an ice hockey rink where one could play ice hockey as well as a sculpture that looked like a cake.

“I think it’s really cool. Like the piano there it’s crazy. When I was younger, I never would have thought people could have made this stuff out of ice,” Gavin Pearce said.

“It’s nice to see something normal before COVID,” Ethan Christian said.

Social-ICE kicks off Friday at 4 p.m. and will run until 10 pm. The event also runs from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday.
