Woman shot and killed in Austin Saturday

(ABC 6 News) – A woman was shot and killed in Austin early Saturday morning, and so far no one is under arrest, but it is clear police have a suspect.

Because this is an ongoing homicide investigation, police have not released much information.

What we do know is about 2 a.m. Saturday, police got a call about a woman in distress. When they arrived at the house, they found 20 year old TyEsha Gills with a gunshot wound. Austin police said they tried to keep her alive, but they were not able to save her life.

"Our officers did respond and attempt to give lifesaving aid along with Mayo ambulance. Unfortunately those efforts were unsuccessful and this did become a homicide investigation for us," Austin Chief of Police David Mckichan said.

Police called this a targeted shooting. Those are the words they commonly use when the suspect is a family member or acquaintance of the victim. Police also said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Chief Mckichan said they have not made any arrests and officers are still gathering evidence.

"Although it is not random, it is still a homicide. We don’t have someone in custody and until we do have that someone in custody, there is danger associated around this person. We just want to make sure we get everything done legally," Chief Mckichan said.

He also said this is Austin’s third homicide since December.

Some neighbors in Austin are worried.

"It’s just happening too much in Austin. It’s getting out of hand. You never know where the bullets are going to go, you know? That’s what’s scary. I mean it’s happening all over. Something’s gotta change," Daniel Wendroth, who lives in Austin, said.

Chief Mckichan said it is not just Austin seeing more violent crime.

"Its been part of a broader statewide pattern where we’ve seen more events leading to homicides in the last year or two years than we’ve seen previously," Chief Mckichan said.

But he also said the community in Austin shouldn’t live in fear.

"The three incidents had some things that caused them that were not random, but we’re aware that if you were a neighbor you wouldn’t want this to play out in your neighborhood," Chief Mckichan said.

He said if you are in a situation where there are guns in the house and the people you are with are showing them off, that is a sign you could be in more danger than others.

Some community members who knew the victim said she had recently moved to Austin from Chicago hoping to get away from all the violence there. They said she had dreams of opening her own cosmetology business in Austin someday.
