Austin city council approves tax abatement

(ABC 6 News) – Tuesday, the Austin city council has voted to approve the tax abatement application from Hormel Foods.
In story we brought you last week, the council approved a 15-year tax abatement request from Hormel Foods to build a new child care center in Austin.

Hormel foods proposed to construct a 130 slot market rate child care facility. They asked for a tax abatement from the city, county and school district for up to 15 years.
It would create a 13 hundred squarefoot facilty estimated to be about 5 million dollars.
It is estimated to bring around 25 new jobs.
“I appreciated Hormel using their resources to better our city and give us more spaces for child care. i know its going to be their facility and they can have that list of folks that they are going to accommodate through their employees but also opening up to the community is very generous,” said Mayor Steve King.
Tuesday, the Austin city council has voted to approve the tax abatement application from Hormel Foods.
Austin is in need of more than 500 placements for kids needing childcare. According to a 2022 report by First Children’s Finance, Mower County is in need of more than 800 placements.
