APD: Juveniles detained after Austin High School lockdown questioned, released

(ABC 6 News) – The Austin Police Department (APD) provided an update to an incident at Austin High School on Wednesday that triggered a nearly two hour lockdown.

APD Chief David McKichan said they have not been able to substantiate the original report that a firearm was present at Austin High School on Wednesday.

APD said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that a school resource officer assigned to Austin High School requested additional help due to a report of a firearm that had possibly been brandished at the school resulting in the school going on a lockdown from 12:06 p.m. to 1:59 p.m.

Chief McKichan said the report followed an altercation that had occurred in a bathroom at the high school. APD said they are not aware of any injuries from that incidient.

APD said Thursday that as they investigated the incident, two juvenile males, 16-year-old and 15-year-old were detained. They were brought to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning as police had cause to believe they were involved in the altercation and that a firearm may have been present during the incident. The two juveniles were later released.

Austin police chief David McKichan said no charges had been filed.

Austin Public Schools Superintendent Joey Page said that while the investigation was a “police matter,” APS would take its own disciplinary measures following the lockdown.

“We will be addressing these issues,” he said.

Page confirmed Thursday that APD’s on-site investigation into the high school’s lockdown was concluded Wednesday, with no indication that any allegations about a firearm at the school or any other rumor were true.

APD said a thorough search of the school was conducted while they were onsite Wednesday.
