Austin man sentenced to 3 years after gun assault, body armor arrest
(ABC 6 News) – UPDATE: Jose Alvarez-Bentzin, Jr. received a total sentence of 36 months at the MN Correctional Facility in St. Cloud Wednesday, Nov. 15.
Alvarez-Bentzin, Jr. received credit for 97 days spent in the Mower County Jail since his August arrest at a home near Packer Arena.
ABC 6 News previously reported that Alvarez-Bentzin Jr. was accused of threatening the residents of 709 6th Avenue NW with a gun while wearing a bulletproof vest on Aug. 11.
Alvarez-Bentzin, Jr. pleaded guilty to 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and committing a crime while wearing/possessing a bullet-resistant vest Oct. 20.
He also entered a guilty plea to a charge of 3rd-degree narcotic sales filed in January.
Several charges in other cases, including an April drug possession charge, multiple assault charges from the August incident, and possession of a firearm with a removed or altered serial number were dismissed at sentencing.

(ABC 6 News) – An Austin man is facing half a dozen charges after police say he was arrested with a gun and wearing body armor.
Among the charges for Jose Alvarez-Bentzin, Jr. are three felony counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and a number of other gun charges.
Police responded to a home near the Packer Arena Friday morning after getting multiple calls that a man was threatening people there with a gun.
“Credit to staff. Upon dispatch, within two minutes, they were out, they made contact, and they were able to apprehend him thankfully with no one injured,” Austin Police Chief David MiKichan said.
Bentzin is in jail with charges pending. Police are looking into whether the gun was stolen.
