(ABC 6 News) – Families in Mason City had the chance to get back-to-school supplies for free.

The 3rd annual Back-to-school block party, hosted by Community Health Center of Mason City had everything from free shoes to wellness checkups.

With the help of other community partners, they were able to make a one-stop shop for parents struggling to get their kids ready for the new school year

United Way began the day with 700 pairs of shoes to give away and they were all gone by the end of the event.

The Salvation Army was giving away school supplies and the Lions club was helping with free eye checks for kids. Hyvee was also handing out free food. Organizers say it didn’t take much to get everyone on board.

"Somebody said it must’ve taken you a while to put this together and truly it did not. It took a couple of phone calls and folks were ready to get their hands in and help out. Yeah. We’re just happy to have so much support and help here and it’s grown every year which I think is a testament to show our community, our unity within the community," said Community outreach organizer, Cori Frein.

The kids got to enjoy some great time with their families but of course, they were excited about the free stuff

"Just hanging out with some friends and family mainly. But my favorite thing would probably be the shoes… shoes too," said Mychal Fricke and Preston Ashcraft.

Organizers tell me they are always in need of volunteers for future events so if you’re interested in getting involved visit here.
